Unity Club Intwararumuri has been operating in Huye district, since 2016. It joined hands with its partners to look after elders who were widowed by the genocide perpetrated against Tutsi in 1994. (They were given the name of Intwaza because they were able to undergo severe pain which enabled them to successfully live by as well as make progress). Most of them are elders who live with serious shock and diseases.
In this respect, Her Excellency Jeannette Kagame, via Unity Club Intwararumuri, hammered out a terrific and lasting remedy by erecting up the houses that were named,” Impinganzima” located in Huye, Rusizi, Nyanza and Bugesera districts, and the aim is to take care of them, to return their worth dignity to them, to be offered all they need to help them enjoy their old age.
After that the widowed elders were sheltered in Impinganzima hostels, Unity Club suggested that their neighbours should be their children, siblings, blessed neighbours as well as creating unity with them. Henceforth, Integrated Community Development Project was put in place.
During the first phase of this project started in 2019 and conluded in 2021, different activities were put in place: to revamp the Impinganzima hostels by enriching them with the equipment that helps them in their old age, to keep seeking knitting tools so that it keeps providing profit to them. In addition, they will have an occupation as well as establish Palliative Care Unit that will make way for the widowed elders to find special support in their old age.
The second phase of Integrated Community Development Project launched in December 2021 and expected to last for 2 years. Activities of this phase will focus on improving the well-being of 353 homes of neighbours of Impinganzima in Taba village.
The activities in the second phase of the project include; building a multipurpose house whereby diversified activities will be taking place between Intwaza - the widowed elders living in Impinganzima hostels and their neighbours living in the Taba neighborhood, building Early childhood development (ECD) whereby children will get care from EDC and will get nutrition supplement, professional growing vegetables and fruits as well as keeping domestic animals that will improve the livelihood of the neighborhood residents as well as building a model village that will be given to those who live in rickety houses.
